MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The needs of children
Autism is a developmental disorder which affects approximately 2.5 in every 1,000 children born.
Children with Autism have difficulties in understanding language even though they have no difficulty with hearing. Approximately 50% of children with Autism never learn to speak and have severe problems in comprehending language.
The Majority of children with Autism have major learning difficulties which will impact on their ability to live independent lives.
Children with autism need specialist assistance to develop the everyday skills which many of us take for granted such as learning to understand language and to communicate, learning to play and to interact with their parents, their brothers, sisters and other people.
As you would expect, the families of children with Autism need the support of services which understand their special needs.
Our work
The Autism Association is an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people with Autism and their families.
The Association provides a range of services which assist children to develop skills which will enable them to live more full and rewarding lives.
Association staff work with each child to develop their ability to communicate and to learn. Communication systems are developed for children who are unable to speak and programmes are developed for each child to assist them to learn and to cope with their disability.
Support, training and counseling services are provided to families to assist them with the additional care required by the child with autism. Much needed respite is also provided to families by way of short holiday breaks for their child at one of the Association’s respite homes.
As young adults with Autism, many will require ongoing support in Association group homes.
