AIM
Employment is a service of the Autism Association of Western Australia
Inc. Our primary aim is to assist
people with Autism Spectrum Disorders to find and keep employment in the
workforce.
This
service is fully funded by the Commonwealth Government and is, therefore, free
to Employers.
Autism
impacts upon a person’s level of ability to understand complex language as well
as their social skills. In contrast,
people with Autism can have excellent skills in their ability to read patterns,
following complex routines, and have a very strong desire to get things right.
People
with Autism are major contributors to employment positions. This contribution is considerably enhanced
given a positive environment, appropriate training and support.
Workers
with Autism are known for their:
A
loyal and dedicated employee with a desire to become a successful member of the
workforce.
We
provide on the job training and support for all jobseekers assisted by AIM
Employment Services. This support is
tailored to meet the individual workers needs, individual work environments and
is specific to employers work conditions.
Support and training can be provided through either individual
placements or enclave support placements.
The
most common placement method is for AIM to provide initial intensive training
and support to the person on the worksite.
Support is reduced over an extended period of time when the employer is
confident that the worker is achieving to expectation. We maintain regular and ongoing contact with
the employer and are always ready to provide any further assistance or support
required.
People
with Autism come from various employment and educational backgrounds and
possess different skills, qualifications and experience. We have many people working successfully in
a variety of commercial enterprises in a wide range of industries. These include retail, banking, light
industry, university, government and automotive. Positions include food processing assistant, print
assistant, packer, data entry clerk, research assistant, stock assistant, mail
clerk.
A
very successful method for providing long-term employment for some individuals
is to place them at a business with three to four other people and supported
fully on an ongoing basis by an AIM staff member. This small group placement is called an enclave and is both cost
effective and highly productive to employers.
Enclaves can be very successful and there are many now operating in
Western Australia in industries including food processing, gardening, printing,
cheque processing and packaging just to name a few. We are also able to provide prospective employers with references
from prominent businesses associated with these successful enclaves.
There
is a range of further benefits in employing workers in an enclave through AIM
Employment Services. These include:
