Group Homes

The Autism Association provides group home support to adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. There is a unique roster system which was developed to maximise relationship building between staff members and the residents as well as routine and predictability for the person with autism.

Group Home Coordinators are responsible for supervising the group homes and ensuring that the residents receive the level of care and attention required to meet their individual needs. Most group homes have only two or three people with autism living together, given the nature of autism and the difficulties experienced in interacting with others. Group Home Coordinators strive to ensure that each person has a life filled with things that they enjoy and have something to look forward to each day.

What support is provided?

Support is provided only to the extent required. Some residents are keen to take part in all of the aspects of daily living, while others prefer not to.

Support may be provided in the form of:

  • providing 24-hour care for the person with autism.
  • assisting with personal care
  • household maintenance and meal preparation
  • organising and attending medical appointments
  • accessing the community
  • managing daily finances
