My Time Parent Support Groups
My Time groups provide local support for mums, dads, grandparents and anyone caring for a young child with a disability. The Autism Association facilitate a group meeting every Tuesday and Thursday morning 9.30 to 11.30 (from 19th October 2009 onwards) at the All Saints Floreat Uniting Church, 50 Berkeley Crescent Floreat.
Children enjoy activities with a play leader who leads children in activities such as singing and drawing so parents can spend time catching up; browsing through our collection of books; and sharing experiences and developing a mutually supportive network. Group facilitators provide information and ideas about a range of topics including getting support for your family; mealtime management and strategies to use when travelling long distances with your child.
Families who have attended My Time in 2009 have benefited from visits by representatives from Carers WA and the Disability Services Commission. These guest speakers provided excellent support and advice on a range of topics. In Term 4, 2009 guest speakers from Active Foundation and Noah’s Ark Library will present and share their knowledge about their services. The My Time group provides an excellent place for parents to meet and share experiences, including a laugh, in a relaxing environment. You are welcome to come along!
Positive Partnerships
This is a national training program aimed at improving the educational outcomes for school aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Staff from the Autism Association form part of the national team and are involved in the development of materials and the delivery of workshops in metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia. This program is funded through The Positive Partnerships: supporting school aged students on the autism spectrum initiative.
Professional development for teachers and other school staff who are working with students with ASD is available online and in face-to-face workshops. We encourage you to discuss these options with your child's teacher.
Free workshops and information sessions for parents and carers of school aged children with ASD are available now.
