Participants will be assisted to make the connection between theory and practice to enhance their ability to work with people with Autism. This seminar promotes self-reflection and consideration of one’s own communication style and behaviours while working with people with Autism. The seminar will be presented using a combination of direct instruction and case studies.

PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE COMPLETED PECS BASIC TRAINING

This workshop is perfect for anyone who has previously attended the PECS Basic Training and is currently implementing PECS.

This interactive workshop is perfect for parents and/or professionals who have previously attended the PECS Basic Training and want to address specific PECS implementation challenges and expand the use of PECS across a wide range of activities and settings. Pyramid’s skilled instructor will lead group discussions and video analyses regarding practical and resourceful solutions, and innovative problem solving strategies for complex PECS implementation situations. The workshop will further provide practical ideas for advanced lessons in expanding the learners’ language and communication within functional activities, and essential tools for identifying communication opportunities across the day. Participants will leave the training with innovative and creative ideas on how to successfully problem solve PECS implementation and how to take PECS to the next level.

  • How to analyse common difficulties with PECS implementation
  • How to generate solutions to difficult PECS implementation situations
  • How to analyse a classroom day and learn to program communication opportunities into all activities
  • How to implement specific training strategies for teaching advanced language concepts

Participants will be assisted to use their knowledge and experiences of their student with Autism to plan for the student’s individualised educational needs. Planning strategies will include the opportunity for priority goals to be implemented across the school day. As well, learning and teaching strategies will be presented to enhance educational outcomes through curriculum differentiation. The session will be interactive and allow time for discussion and sharing with other participants. The seminar will be presented using a combination of content delivery and reflective activities.

Teachers who have a student with Autism in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Junior Primary School settings.

*Pre-requisite skills: It is recommended that participants have a broad knowledge of working with students with Autism in ECE and Junior Primary School.

The Autism Association of Western Australia
Proudly invites all Occupational Therapists, who work with preschoolers and primary age children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, to an exciting three day workshop presented by Dr. Chris Chapparo.

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to apply information about sensory processing to particular difficulties of sensory regulation, sensory discrimination, self organisation, and behaviour to children with Autism. Emphasis will be on assessment and intervention for young children from preschool through to primary school age. Intervention approaches that will be addressed include those that aim to build children’s processing capacity to enhance functional outcomes as well as those that aim to address sensory issues in the environment.

About the Presenter:

Dr Chris Chapparo PhD, DipOT is a senior lecturer in the School of Occupation and Leisure Sciences at the University of Sydney. She is internationally recognised for her contribution to occupational therapy teachings and research and has received many awards for her work. Her interests are in cognitive, management of sensory / motor problems in children and adults as well as
occupational therapy theory.

She is the co-author with Judy Ranka BSc (OT) MA, of Occupational Performance Model (Australia). Dr Chapparo’s research interests lie in the areas of children’s information
processing and social participation.
