A Regional Week to Remember!

This January we welcomed 25 WA regional families to our Regional Intensive Therapy Program. Each family travelled to Perth for a week of therapy, parent training workshops, quality family time – all while having loads of fun!

We love meeting each family and to kick start the week the team set out a plan and welcomed the new members of the team who would be joining in to support.

Throughout the week we hosted two Programs, our School Age and First Steps group. Each Program hosts a number of fun activities each day such as cooking and science experiments, these activities are designed to work towards each child’s goals.

Many children and families have joined us each year; and we love to see each child and their family connect with each other and continue to learn with their friends as they transition from the First Steps Program and into the School Age Program.

“Thomas has made friends for life and we have also been able to meet families who have the same experiences and get to build really great relationships”

Each family had the opportunity to join the other parents at our Parent Trainings and catchups. The value in this opportunity is being able to walk away with friendships and connect with other parents also living in remote parts of WA who understand the journey and their experiences. Our regional dads even used this week to catch up over breakfast.

During the week, families can take advantage of having some quality time with each other by visiting Perth’s best sites, such as the Perth Zoo or going for a walk in Kings Park. There were even a few families who made the most of the warm weather by taking a few surf lessons with the guys at Ocean Heroes

Lachlan’s Week

Lachlan’s Mum, Gemma said, “Lachlan enjoys coming down, he walks away each day talking about what he got up to during the day.”

This is Lachlan’s 3rd Regional Intensive Program and Gemma notices how much Lachlan has grown since he first started coming.

“He knows his friends and he is a lot more independent. When I ask him what he will be doing that day, he says, ‘I have to check the schedule.’ He knows his routine and takes the lead in that.”

“We love this Program because it’s great to come away in January with solid goals for the school year that I can work with his schoolteacher to achieve! We also get goals and a matrix plan that I can refer back in our day-to-day routine.”

“I have been able to exchange numbers with other parents and it has been a great opportunity to build connections.”

Above all else, the most important part of the week for everyone involved is having fun and making memories that last a lifetime. The team love seeing how much each family enjoys the week and seeing each child reach their goals – check out the smiles in the photos below!

We look forward to seeing our Regional families again at the next Regional Intensive Therapy Week in the middle of the year!
